Hiking
Most New River hiking trails climb slowly
through field and forest before ascending into the valley's
remote Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountain regions. The New
River Trail, a popular and largely level trail, requires
hikers and backpackers to expend little effort in grade
changes, and several parts of the trail near the river are
wheelchair-accessible. The Appalachian National Scenic
Trail and many other hiking trails that lead though the
Jefferson National Forest may require a knowledge of
orienteering and an adaptation to physical exertion.
