Numerous caves are found in the New River Valley region of Virginia, however the only commercial cavern in Southwestern Virginia is found in the neighboring Roanoke Valley region.

Dixie Caverns is a small show cavern originally opened in 1923. The "discovery" of the cave is typically credited to an inquisitive dog, but the Indians of Southwest Virginia had known of and used the cave centuries earlier. The only caverns in Southwest Virginia, Dixie Caverns offers 45-minute cavern tours.
